Privacy Policy for Hanzi Widget

Effective date: August 15, 2026

Last updated: August 15, 2026

Hanzi Widget ("the App") is a free iOS app that shows Chinese vocabulary on your lock screen. This policy explains what the App does — and does not do — with your information.

The short version: Hanzi Widget has no servers and no accounts. Your vocabulary, decks, review history, settings, and photos stay on your device. The developer of the App does not collect, receive, store, sell, or share any of your personal information.

1. Who we are

Hanzi Widget is developed and operated by ("we", "us", "the developer"), an individual developer.

Contact: help@goeevees.com

2. Information we collect

We do not collect any personal information.

The App has no backend server, no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, no crash reporting service, and no tracking of any kind. There is no mechanism by which your data can reach us.

Data that the App creates or handles is stored only on your device:

• Vocabulary cards, decks, and folders you create or import

Where it is stored: Local SQLite database on your device

Purpose: Study content

• Review history and spaced-repetition scheduling

Where it is stored: Local SQLite database on your device

Purpose: Deciding what to show you next

• App settings (active deck, widget rotation interval, display options)

Where it is stored: Local SQLite database on your device

Purpose: App behavior

• The deck currently shown on your lock screen

Where it is stored: iOS App Group container shared between the App and its widget (group.com.vincentphan.hanziwidget)

Purpose: Letting the widget render without the App running

• Sign-in details, if you choose to sign in (see §4)

Where it is stored: iOS Keychain on your device, via Secure Store

Purpose: Showing your name/email on the Profile screen

None of this leaves your device, except as described in §4 and §5.

3. Photos and the camera

The App can turn Chinese text in a photo or screenshot into flashcards.

• The App requests access to your photo library or camera only when you use this feature, and iOS asks for your permission first.

• Text recognition (OCR) runs entirely on your device using Google's ML Kit on-device text recognition model, which is bundled inside the App. Your images are never uploaded anywhere — not to us, not to Google, not to anyone.

• The App does not save copies of your photos. The image is held in memory during processing and the recognized text is discarded once you leave the reader screen, unless you explicitly save cards from it.

4. Sign in with Apple / Sign in with Google (optional)

Signing in is entirely optional. The App is fully functional without it. At present, signing in only personalizes the Profile screen — there is no cloud sync, no account on our side, and no server that receives your identity.

Sign in with Apple. Apple returns a user identifier and, on your first sign-in, the name and email address you chose to share (including Apple's "Hide My Email" relay address, if you selected it). These are stored in your device's Keychain and nowhere else.

Sign in with Google. The App sends you to Google's own sign-in page. If you approve, the App receives an access token and requests your basic profile (email, name, profile picture URL) directly from Google. The token and profile are stored in your device's Keychain and nowhere else. The App requests only the openid, profile, and email scopes; it cannot read your Gmail, Drive, Contacts, or any other Google data.

These sign-in flows involve communication between your device and Apple or Google, and their handling of that data is governed by their own privacy policies:

• Apple: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/

• Google: https://policies.google.com/privacy

Signing out deletes this data. Use "Sign out" on the Profile screen. For Google, the App also asks Google to revoke the access token. Deleting the App removes all locally stored sign-in data as well.

5. Other network activity

Apart from the optional sign-in flows described in §4, the App makes no network requests. The bundled HSK vocabulary and Chinese-English dictionary ship inside the App; no downloads, lookups, or content fetches occur at runtime.

Two things happen outside the App that are worth naming:

• Text-to-speech. Tapping to hear a word's pronunciation uses the speech synthesizer built into iOS. This is handled by Apple's system service under Apple's privacy policy; the App only passes it the word.

• App Store and iOS diagnostics. If you have enabled sharing analytics or crash reports with developers in iOS Settings, Apple may provide us with aggregated, anonymized crash and usage statistics through App Store Connect. We cannot identify individual users from this, and it is controlled by your iOS settings, not by the App.

6. Tracking, advertising, and sale of data

The App does not:

• track you across apps or websites, or access the Advertising Identifier (IDFA)

• display advertisements

• sell, rent, or share personal information with third parties

• profile you or make automated decisions about you

We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA), because we do not collect personal information at all.

7. Your data and your rights

Because your data never leaves your device, you have complete control over it:

• Access and export: your cards and decks are visible in the App; the underlying database lives in the App's container on your device.

• Correction: edit or delete any card, deck, or setting inside the App.

• Deletion: delete individual cards and decks in the App, sign out to remove sign-in data, or delete the App from your device to erase everything it stores, including the widget's shared container.

Privacy laws such as the GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA/CPRA (California) give you rights to access, correct, delete, and port your personal data, and to complain to a supervisory authority. We honor these rights, but in practice there is nothing for us to act on: we hold no copy of your data and cannot access your device. If you believe we hold information about you, write to the contact address above and we will respond within 30 days.

8. Data retention and security

Your data is retained on your device until you delete it or uninstall the App. It is protected by iOS's app sandbox and by your device passcode and encryption. Sign-in credentials are stored in the iOS Keychain, which is hardware-encrypted. Please note that vocabulary shown by the lock-screen widget is, by design, visible on your lock screen without unlocking your device — do not put sensitive information into your decks.

9. Children's privacy

The App is suitable for general audiences and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA/UK). Since no data is collected or transmitted, no parental consent mechanism under COPPA or the GDPR is required. Sign-in via Apple or Google is subject to those providers' own age requirements.

10. International users

The App processes data locally on your device wherever you are. No international data transfer takes place, other than the optional sign-in requests you initiate to Apple's or Google's servers.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the App changes — for example, if optional cloud sync is added in a future version. We will update the "Last updated" date above and, for material changes, provide notice in the App or in the App Store release notes. Continued use of the App after a change means you accept the updated policy.

Terms of Service

By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App and delete it from your device.

1. The App

Hanzi Widget displays Chinese vocabulary on your lock screen and home screen, lets you import and create flashcard decks, review them with spaced repetition, and generate cards from photos of Chinese text. It is provided free of charge. There are no subscriptions, in-app purchases, or advertisements.

The App runs entirely on your device. We do not operate a server, host your content, or maintain user accounts on our systems.

2. License

We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App on Apple-branded devices you own or control, as permitted by the App Store Terms of Service and Apple's Usage Rules. This license is for your own use; it is not a sale of the App.

The App's source code is separately released under the MIT License (see the LICENSE file in the project repository). Where the MIT License grants you broader rights to the source code, those rights are unaffected by these Terms, which govern the compiled App as distributed through the App Store.

3. What you may not do

You agree not to:

• use the App in violation of any applicable law or regulation;

• use the App to store, display, or distribute content that is unlawful, infringing, or that you do not have the right to use;

• misrepresent the App as your own product or remove attribution notices for third-party data included with it (see §7);

• attempt to interfere with the security or integrity of the App or of any device or system it runs on.

Reverse engineering, modification, and redistribution of the App's source code are governed by the MIT License rather than prohibited here.

4. Your content

Vocabulary you create, files you import, and photos you scan ("Your Content") remain yours. We claim no ownership of and no license to Your Content — a straightforward consequence of the fact that it never leaves your device and we never receive it.

You are solely responsible for Your Content, including having the right to use any material you import, and for ensuring you do not place sensitive or private information into decks that will be displayed on your lock screen, where it may be visible to others without unlocking your device.

5. Backups and data loss

You are responsible for backing up Your Content. The App stores everything locally. Deleting the App, losing or resetting your device, or an iOS restore gone wrong will permanently erase your decks and review history. We have no copy and cannot recover it for you. Use iOS backups (iCloud or Finder/iTunes) if you want your data preserved.

6. Third-party services

If you choose to sign in with Apple or Google, your use of those services is governed by their terms and privacy policies, not ours. Distribution of the App is governed by Apple's App Store terms. We are not responsible for third-party services and do not control their availability or behavior.

7. Third-party content and attribution

The App includes vocabulary data derived from third-party sources, used under their licenses:

• CC-CEDICT (definitions and pinyin), licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/). The derived vocabulary file distributed with the App is likewise available under CC BY-SA 3.0.

• complete-hsk-vocabulary (HSK levels and frequency ranks), subject to that project's own license terms.

Attribution is shown in the App under Settings → Credits and in the NOTICE file in the project repository. These licenses continue to apply to that data independently of these Terms.

8. Accuracy of content

Vocabulary definitions, pinyin, and text recognized from photos may be incomplete, ambiguous, or wrong. Machine text recognition in particular is imperfect. The App is a study aid, not an authoritative dictionary or a translation service, and must not be relied on where accuracy matters — for example in academic, medical, legal, financial, or safety-critical contexts.

9. Availability and changes

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue the App, or any of its features, at any time and without notice or liability. We are under no obligation to provide updates, bug fixes, or continued compatibility with future versions of iOS.

10. Disclaimer of warranties

THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE APP WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR FREE OF HARMFUL COMPONENTS, OR THAT ANY DEFECT WILL BE CORRECTED.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of implied warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you. Nothing in these Terms limits any non-waivable consumer rights you have under the law of your country of residence.

11. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR EXEMPLARY DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF DATA, CONTENT, OR STUDY PROGRESS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE APP, EVEN IF WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

BECAUSE THE APP IS PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE, OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL CLAIMS RELATING TO THE APP IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR THE APP (WHICH IS ZERO) OR USD $10.

12. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claim or demand, including reasonable legal fees, arising from Your Content, your use of the App, or your violation of these Terms or of any law or third-party right.

13. Apple-specific terms

You acknowledge that these Terms are between you and us only, not with Apple, and that Apple is not responsible for the App or its content. Accordingly:

• Apple has no obligation to furnish any maintenance or support services for the App. Support requests should be directed to us at the address in §17.

• In the event the App fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund any purchase price paid (zero) for the App. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation whatsoever with respect to the App.

• We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims by you or a third party relating to the App, including product liability claims, claims that the App fails to conform to legal or regulatory requirements, and claims arising under consumer protection or similar legislation.

• We, not Apple, are responsible for investigating and defending any third-party claim that the App infringes that party's intellectual property rights.

• You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as "terrorist supporting", and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.

• Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and, upon your acceptance, have the right to enforce them against you.

14. Termination

These Terms apply until terminated. You may terminate them at any time by deleting the App. We may terminate your license if you materially breach these Terms. Sections 4, 5, 7, 8, and 10 through 16 survive termination.

15. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and the state and federal courts located in California will have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory consumer-law provisions or of the right to bring proceedings in the courts of your country of residence.

16. General

These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the App. If any provision is held unenforceable, the remainder stays in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it. You may not assign these Terms; we may assign them in connection with a transfer of the App.

We may update these Terms as the App changes. Material changes will be noted by updating the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, through in-app or App Store release notes. Continued use after a change means you accept the revised Terms.
